From Pirate Party of Canada
[21:59] <~MikkelPaulson> now that the three regulars are here anyway, I'll call the meeting
to order
[21:59] <+Zblewski> Okay.
[22:00] <~MikkelPaulson> first order of business is Winnipeg North as usual
[22:00] <~MikkelPaulson> Stephane, does Jeff have his funding?
[22:00] <@Nuitari> yes
[22:00] <~MikkelPaulson> for the record, how much? what's left over?
[22:01] <@Nuitari> he requested 210 with 40 extra as a safety margin
[22:01] <@Nuitari> I've sent him 300
[22:01] <@Nuitari> plenty left
[22:02] <~MikkelPaulson> good to hear
[22:02] <~MikkelPaulson> so we'll be in a position to fund a Calgary Centre—North campaign
should we decide to contest that?
[22:02] <@Nuitari> yes
[22:03] <~MikkelPaulson> nice
[22:03] <+Zblewski> I've been calling Jeff every few days
[22:03] <@Nuitari> good
[22:03] <+Zblewski> To make sure he has everything he needs and that everyone is on track
[22:04] <+Zblewski> So far his needs are being met
[22:04] <~MikkelPaulson> how's his local volunteer force?
[22:04] <+Zblewski> When he had his editing session, there were 6 people besides him, I
believe
[22:04] <+Zblewski> And so far there has been steady help
[22:04] <@Nuitari> cool
[22:05] <~MikkelPaulson> great to hear
[22:05] <~MikkelPaulson> I hope he's been divvying up the door-knocking a bit
[22:05] <~MikkelPaulson> it's pretty tough for one man to knock on every door in the riding
[22:05] <+Zblewski> he told me they went out at least once
[22:05] <~MikkelPaulson> amounts to about a thousand per day
[22:06] <~MikkelPaulson> cool
[22:06] <@Nuitari> cool
[22:06] <+Zblewski> The last time I called him, 2 days before the debate, he said he and the
team would be heading out the next day
[22:06] <~MikkelPaulson> and Jeff is remarkably well-connected in the community
[22:06] <+Zblewski> Indeed
[22:06] <~MikkelPaulson> which goes a long way
[22:06] <+Zblewski> His YT channel, at the rate it's going, should have more total channel
and video views than Kevin Chief at any time
[22:07] <+Zblewski> and he's had his first video since June
[22:07] <~MikkelPaulson> yeah, but bear in mind that people from all over Canada are
watching him
[22:07] <~MikkelPaulson> Chief's viewers are mostly people in the riding
[22:07] <~MikkelPaulson> so 1 view != 1 vote
[22:07] <~MikkelPaulson> still encouraging to see, though
[22:07] <@Nuitari> yes definitely
[22:08] <@Nuitari> the new batch of bumper stickers has been mailed out today also
[22:08] <@Nuitari> just saw the email from the supplier
[22:08] <+Zblewski> Excellent
[22:08] <~MikkelPaulson> which means that we have to step up our YouTube activities as a
party too
[22:08] <@Nuitari> I'll email Jeff asking if he wants/needs the balance
[22:08] <~MikkelPaulson> I'm sure he could use some more
[22:08] <~MikkelPaulson> I didn't have that many to give him
[22:09] <+Zblewski> neither do I
[22:09] <@Nuitari> if he doesn't need them I can mail you the stickers
[22:10] <+Zblewski> We'll keep them on hand as we need them
[22:10] <@Nuitari> aye
[22:10] <~MikkelPaulson> all I have left are French
[22:11] <~MikkelPaulson> which aren't that useful in Edmonton
[22:11] <+Zblewski> Indeed
[22:11] <~MikkelPaulson> actually that's a lie, but I only have a handful of English
stickers too
[22:11] <~MikkelPaulson> wait
[22:11] <~MikkelPaulson> I have like 20
[22:11] <~MikkelPaulson> amazing what lives on this desk
[22:11] <~MikkelPaulson> but a few more wouldn't hurt
[22:12] <@Nuitari> ok if Jeff doesn't answer I'll send both of you more stickers
[22:12] <~MikkelPaulson> sounds good
[22:12] <+Zblewski> Okay.
[22:12] <~MikkelPaulson> not sure if Dain wants more but he sent the last of his to me
[22:13] <~MikkelPaulson> I think
[22:14] <~MikkelPaulson> anything else to add on Winnipeg?
[22:14] <+Zblewski> Nope.
[22:14] <+Zblewski> Just keep the campaign tight as usual.
[22:15] <~MikkelPaulson> sounds good
[22:15] <~MikkelPaulson> and Stephane, I'll get that donor letter to the translators tonight
[22:15] <@Nuitari> ok
[22:16] <~MikkelPaulson> so what's the deal with Quebec?
[22:17] <@Nuitari> there is quite a bit of discontentment due to corruption
[22:17] <@Nuitari> and we should try to get some support because of it
[22:18] <~MikkelPaulson> any suggestions on how to proceed?
[22:18] <+Zblewski> The problem is
[22:19] <@Nuitari> facebook ?
[22:19] <+Zblewski> How much of an influence does a federal party have on provincial
municipal politics?
[22:19] <@Nuitari> I meant starting a provincial party
[22:19] <~MikkelPaulson> no
[22:20] <~MikkelPaulson> as a federal party, we have a narrow platform
[22:20] <~MikkelPaulson> and as you said, only half of our platform would actually affect
provincial politics
[22:21] <~MikkelPaulson> would you vote for a party whose only platform point was to be more
transparent in doing vaguely-specified "stuff"?
[22:21] <~MikkelPaulson> I wouldn't
[22:21] <~MikkelPaulson> I thought you were talking about building a local branch of the
federal party, which I would support
[22:22] <@Nuitari> no more of a provincial party
[22:22] <@Nuitari> with the very narrow platform
[22:22] <~MikkelPaulson> whether or not the corruption is present at a federal level, I
think people will be more open to the need for transparency at all levels of government
[22:22] <~MikkelPaulson> and we can win some support there
[22:22] <~MikkelPaulson> but federally, not provincially
[22:22] <@Nuitari> just to give some context
[22:23] <@Nuitari> there is an ex MP, Francois Legault that quit politics early last year
[22:23] <@Nuitari> there was rumors of him wanting to start a new party
[22:23] <@Nuitari> surveys placed that, non-existent, undefined party, at 39% of vote
[22:24] <+Zblewski> Odd.
[22:24] <~MikkelPaulson> bully for him
[22:25] <~MikkelPaulson> similarly, when the Bloc formed, it was through a mass exodus from
the federal Liberal Party
[22:25] <~MikkelPaulson> we don't have that existing support from established politicians
[22:25] <@Nuitari> perhaps, but starting a new party requires people and MPs
[22:26] <@Nuitari> well candidates
[22:26] <@Nuitari> it just screams opportunity
[22:26] <~MikkelPaulson> maybe so
[22:27] <~MikkelPaulson> but if you remove copyright, patents, and privacy, it's not a
pirate party, is it?
[22:27] <~MikkelPaulson> furthermore, as far as I know, we're not permitted to form any
direct ties to a provincial party
[22:27] <@Nuitari> right we can't form it directly
[22:27] <~MikkelPaulson> which means that we couldn't copy+paste our membership into a
provincial level
[22:28] <@Nuitari> but we can definitely put the seed outthere
[22:28] <~MikkelPaulson> how would this be beneficial to us?
[22:29] <@Nuitari> pretty much anything that gets our name out there would be
[22:29] <~MikkelPaulson> I just don't see the connection
[22:29] <~MikkelPaulson> it's like the ideas people have been batting around about starting
our own ISP (which we can't)
[22:30] <~MikkelPaulson> even if it could be done, it's entirely peripheral to our
EC-mandated purpose of getting people in Parliament
[22:30] <@Nuitari> ok let's go to something else
[22:31] <~MikkelPaulson> Zblewski: anything to add?
[22:31] <+Zblewski> No, but I am in agreement with MikkelPaulson.
[22:32] <~MikkelPaulson> very well
[22:32] <~MikkelPaulson> shall we put it to a vote for the record or just move on?
[22:33] <@Nuitari> just move on
[22:33] <+Zblewski> move on
[22:33] <~MikkelPaulson> I had a feeling you were going to say that ;)
[22:33] <~MikkelPaulson> okay, YouTube
[22:33] <@Nuitari> yes
[22:33] <~MikkelPaulson> (I'm going off the agenda here https://www.pirateparty.ca/forum
/index.php?topic=545.0 )
[22:33] <@Nuitari> at best it takes 2 years to get a damn trademark
[22:34] <~MikkelPaulson> oh yeah, forgot all about that
[22:34] <~MikkelPaulson> we should get the ball rolling, though
[22:35] <+Zblewski> No video editing volunteers have stepped up.
[22:35] <~MikkelPaulson> maybe Jeff's volunteer would be willing to help out
[22:35] <~MikkelPaulson> I'm quite impressed with the quality of the first little video they
put together
[22:35] <+Zblewski> Maybe so. I'll inquire.
[22:35] <+Zblewski> You also have to remember that this is a federal thing
[22:36] <+Zblewski> we need people available to film cross-country
[22:36] <~MikkelPaulson> probably better to wait until after the election, anyway
[22:36] <+Zblewski> Yes.
[22:36] <~MikkelPaulson> so, not quite sure why I put that on the agenda
[22:36] <~MikkelPaulson> guess we'll come back to it
[22:37] <+Zblewski> I don't know how this will work out at the moment, when one person does
an amazing job at editing, but no-one else is available to film or co-edit
[22:37] <+Zblewski> So, yes.
[22:37] <+Zblewski> Postpone this issue.
[22:37] <~MikkelPaulson> okay
[22:37] <+Zblewski> For a general meeting
[22:37] <~MikkelPaulson> tomorrow
[22:37] <+Zblewski> Indeed.
[22:37] <~MikkelPaulson> we will need some advertising for the next general election
[22:38] <~MikkelPaulson> who knows when that will be
[22:38] <~MikkelPaulson> but ah well, after the by-election anyway
[22:39] <~MikkelPaulson> finally, Stephane, I know we've bounced emails back and forth about
this, but again for the record: how has the matter of the auditor played out?
[22:40] <@Nuitari> good lead
[22:40] <@Nuitari> waiting for the details of the paperwork he needs to open the file
[22:40] <@Nuitari> 500 to 1000$ for the party auditing
[22:40] <@Nuitari> and whatever EC pays for the candidate
[22:42] <+Zblewski> Good to hear.
[22:42] <~MikkelPaulson> while I appreciate the willingness to support a small party, his
fees seem pretty low compared to what BDO wanted
[22:42] <~MikkelPaulson> which makes me a bit wary
[22:42] <~MikkelPaulson> maybe contact the Rhinos and see what their experiences have been
with him
[22:43] <~MikkelPaulson> I'm sure they wouldn't mind sharing that info
[22:43] <~MikkelPaulson> unlike most parties
[22:43] <+Zblewski> Good idea. Their leader is in Montreal too, I believe
[22:43] <@Nuitari> can't be worse then bdo
[22:44] <~MikkelPaulson> well, one would think
[22:45] <@Nuitari> all an auditor has to do is to look at the books, look at some of the
receipts and say we did a good job of adding everything up
[22:45] <~MikkelPaulson> still, probably best to do a bit of research before we take the
plunge
[22:45] <~MikkelPaulson> can't hurt
[22:45] <@Nuitari> I'll ask neorhino what they think
[22:45] <~MikkelPaulson> apparently they rebranded themselves to "Rhinoceros Party" this year
[22:46] <@Nuitari> cool
[22:46] <@Nuitari> a touch of nostalgia there
[22:46] <~MikkelPaulson> yup
[22:46] <~MikkelPaulson> http://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=pol&dir=par&
document=index&lang=e#neorhino
[22:46] <@Nuitari> yeah
[22:46] <~MikkelPaulson> although I'm a bit confused since their site still says NeoRhino
[22:47] <@Nuitari> the auditor has a decent looking home office
[22:47] <~MikkelPaulson> knowing them they're just trying to screw with our heads
[22:48] <~MikkelPaulson> anything else to add, or should we wrap things up?
[22:48] <~MikkelPaulson> my thermostat is broken so it keeps getting colder and colder
[22:48] <~MikkelPaulson> have to pick up a new one before I freeze to death
[22:48] <+Zblewski> I have nothing to add.
[22:48] <@Nuitari> nothing to add
[22:48] <@Nuitari> oya
[22:48] <~MikkelPaulson> one thing to add?
[22:48] <~MikkelPaulson> ;)
[22:48] <@Nuitari> the member sign up page can now also take only donations
[22:48] <+Zblewski> Okies.
[22:48] <~MikkelPaulson> great start
[22:49] <~MikkelPaulson> we should get moving on the mass mailing asking for donations then
[22:49] <@Nuitari> yes
[22:49] <@Nuitari> I can even put a special URL in the email to prefill the form
[22:49] <~MikkelPaulson> I was thinking postal, but that's okay too
[22:50] <@Nuitari> let's start by email
[22:50] <~MikkelPaulson> we'd probably have a better response rate by letter
[22:50] <~MikkelPaulson> very well
[22:50] <~MikkelPaulson> we'll include that in the December newsletter
[22:50] <+Zblewski> Do them at the same time, IMO
[22:50] <+Zblewski> Honestly.
[22:50] <@Nuitari> let's do it now
[22:50] <~MikkelPaulson> or make it a separate email?
[22:50] <~MikkelPaulson> Zblewski: email and postal?
[22:50] <+Zblewski> Yes.
[22:50] <@Nuitari> as an email that also talks about winnipeg north
[22:51] <+Zblewski> I'll draft one text for postal
[22:51] <~MikkelPaulson> sounds good
[22:51] <~MikkelPaulson> put it on PP and I'll take a look alter on
[22:51] <~MikkelPaulson> *later
[22:51] <+Zblewski> someone draft a seperate text for an email
[22:51] <@Nuitari> guys
[22:51] <@Nuitari> start on the email one
[22:51] <@Nuitari> let's raise money from it
[22:51] <@Nuitari> and discuss winnipeg
[22:51] <@Nuitari> mass snail mail is very expensive to do canada wide
[22:51] <~MikkelPaulson> Zblewski: want to do a spot of phone canvassing before the 29th?
[22:52] <+Zblewski> I'm way too busy.
[22:52] <@Nuitari> we can also call people
[22:52] <+Zblewski> People don't respond to phone when it involves cash... sometimes
[22:52] <+Zblewski> it's very very hit and miss
[22:52] <@Nuitari> right
[22:52] <+Zblewski> unreliable
[22:53] <@Nuitari> but phone is 1c a minute
[22:53] <~MikkelPaulson> got time to give me a run-down? I have no experience with cold
calling
[22:53] <~MikkelPaulson> free in my case
[22:53] <@Nuitari> mail is about 50c a letter
[22:53] <@Nuitari> email is free
[22:53] <@Nuitari> so let's start iwth email
[22:53] <+Zblewski> First off
[22:53] <~MikkelPaulson> see if we can get Jake in on it too, find out if he's still alive
[22:53] <+Zblewski> I'll concede to nuitari to start with email
[22:53] <~MikkelPaulson> I agree
[22:54] <+Zblewski> MikkelPaulson: Care to be on skype saturday?
[22:54] <~MikkelPaulson> sure
[22:54] <+Zblewski> Say, 9 Eastern, 7 Central
[22:54] <~MikkelPaulson> send me an SMS if I'm not around
[22:54] <+Zblewski> Okay.
[22:54] <~MikkelPaulson> 8 central
[22:54] <~MikkelPaulson> 7 mountain
[22:54] <+Zblewski> Oopsies.
[22:55] <@Nuitari> besides it's much more quicker to do an email campaign
[22:55] <+Zblewski> 7 mountain.
[22:55] <~MikkelPaulson> :)
[22:55] <~MikkelPaulson> sounds good
[22:55] <~MikkelPaulson> anything else or can I go get warm?
[22:55] <+Zblewski> I need to get outta here folks, so we'll start on the email henceforth
[22:55] <+Zblewski> I'm done
[22:56] <~MikkelPaulson> sure
[22:56] <~MikkelPaulson> start a pad and email us the URL
[22:56] <+Zblewski> gotcha
[22:56] <+Zblewski> I move to adjourn
[22:56] <~MikkelPaulson> seconded
[22:56] <@Nuitari> alright
[22:56] <@Nuitari> send me the link to the pad too
[22:56] <@Nuitari> also
[22:56] <+Zblewski> Mhm
[22:56] <@Nuitari> can you do a small twitter about accepting contributions ?
[22:57] <~MikkelPaulson> a 140-character Twitter? ;)
[22:57] <~MikkelPaulson> will do
[22:58] <~MikkelPaulson> and with that, I'll declare the meeting adjourned
