Candidate's Application
NAME/NOM: David Ascroft
PROVINCE: Ontario
RIDING/CIRCONSCRIPTION: Nepean-Carleton
PARTY INVOLVEMENT / PARTICIPATION DE PARTI:
After the 2011 election my involvement has been that of a passive observer but that's mostly because of my current employment. The summer months keep me very busy but as the fall rolls around my thoughts are turning once again to the needs of Nepean-Carleton constituents and how I can best be of service to them as their representative.
POLITICAL EXPERIENCE / L'EXPÉRIENCE POLITIQUE:
My previous polictical experience includes holding down the position of mayor of two communities in Ontario one of which is inside my current federal riding. I've also held the position as Deputy Returning Officer in previous elections in Halifax, NS. I also assisted with campaigns for other both municipal and provincial candidates in Kingston and Ottawa area ridings.
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST / CONFLITS D'INTÉRÊTS:
I have no affiliations with any other party or organization that would negatively affect my ability to represent the constituents of Nepean-Carleton.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT / PARTICIPATION DE LA COMMUNAUTÉ:
I have been very active in Nepean-Carleton and was presented with a parliamentary award for volunteerism for my efforts. Over the years I've volunteered for dozens of charities and community events in my riding and the Greater Ottawa region. Most recently, I came out in support of the Northern Ontario Fire Evacuees staying at Algonquin College and assisted at an event to make them feel welcome during their visit.
There are a number of people I can call on for support with my campaign and my business contacts with the Manotick Business Breakfast Club and other BIA's and BBCs will also be of assistance in this endeavour. I also have contacts with a number of other business, local area politicians and personalities that I can access for assistance and support. I'm sure I have a feel for how the residents (especially the rural members) of my riding feel on a number of hot button topics currently in the news.
PLATFORM / MANIFESTE:
I am in accord with the core values of the Pirate Party of Canada's especially those dealing with privacy and open government. Having worked in the intelligence field for many years I know what the government is capable of doing with regards to privacy and feel strongly that insufficient watchdogs are in place to protect our fundamental right to privacy. The government must also be open to public scrutiny. I am proud to be a member of the Pirate Party of Canada and would be proud to continue being the candidate for the Pirate Party of Canada in Nepean-Carleton.
