From Pirate Party of Canada
[21:30] <@Rintaran> Well, I have 9:30pm Eastern. I have not received any word from Mikkel one way or another, and he was sent the same text message as the rest of you. [21:31] <@Rintaran> We appear to have 4/5 of the board present for the evening. So let's get started. [21:33] <@Rintaran> Would anyone like to go first with updates about their PPCA activities? [21:33] <@svulliez> Sure. [21:34] <@Rintaran> The floor is yours Vulliez. [21:34] <@svulliez> I have been aggressively recruiting recently here in Vancouver. I am doing quite well at bringing people in, it seems I've got a few extra people looking to get involved. [21:36] <@svulliez> The party has been traditionally me do [21:36] <@svulliez> *male dominated [21:37] <@svulliez> So I have been looking for females and members of the LGBT community specifically, although my reach has been broad [21:37] <@svulliez> Using the network I built through occupy to the best of my ability, I have a meeting tomorrow with some potential volunteers. [21:38] <@svulliez> Also, waiting for the election and trying to ask good questions of the candidates. I'm excited. [21:39] <@svulliez> Other than that, I have been pursuing other projects. [21:39] <@svulliez> End. [21:39] <@Rintaran> Sounds like you've been busy with some ground work. [21:40] <@Rintaran> Bakhos or Bleskie? Would either of you care to update us? [21:41] <@Rintaran> Well, I guess I'll go while they're off doing whatever they're doing. [21:42] <@Rintaran> I ended up having to cancel this past week's meeting because of the storm that rolled in making the travel treacherous and cancelling a lot of bus routes for most of the night. [21:42] <@svulliez> Life is ruled by chaos hah. [21:43] <@Rintaran> That being said, I've finalized a local pamphlet, which has been distributed to the 100 peeps on the Ottawa mailing list with the request to print 20 and pass them on. I've personally printed and handed out about 100 so far. [21:43] <@svulliez> Awesome. [21:44] <@Rintaran> I've also printed out and begun sticking up QR+Logo stickers at visible locations around Ottawa. Most people understand QR codes, surprisingly, to I figure it'll be nice to prey on some of that innate curiosity our species is well known for. A quick scan and they're at the PPCA website. [21:44] <@Rintaran> We have a small sample order of sew-on PPCA crests picked up. I haven't had the chance to look at them, but will be seeing them at our first local meeting in the new year. [21:45] <@Rintaran> The RV can't be decorated in PPCA logos until the spring. The temperature dropped unexpectedly and it's far too large for the person doing it to bring it into their garage. [21:46] <@Rintaran> That about covers my past week, not counting the campaign stuff, trying to answer questions about the various positions, and becoming concerned about the way people want to overlap the Poli & Exec boards. [21:47] <@Rintaran> Would Bleskie or Bakhos happen to be around to give their updates? [21:47] <@svulliez> I've always maintained I intended to be on both boards [21:50] <@Rintaran> There's nothing in the constitution to prevent it, so we'll just have to see how it rolls out. [21:52] <@Rintaran> Well, there goes Mike's login. He was here and talking shortly before the meeting. [21:52] <@Rintaran> Stephane as well, though he seems to have gone silent too. [21:52] <@svulliez> We can look into tweaking the constitution in the new year as we encounter problems. [21:53] <@Rintaran> Yeah. We would only need 15-people online simultaneously to do so. [21:53] <@svulliez> It's always been me and you, Rintaran... [21:53] <@svulliez> Except when it was just you. [21:54] <@Rintaran> Which has happened far too often. [21:54] <@Rintaran> I didn't really expect much in the way of the Interim PB to begin with. It isn't quite right for us to be making policy & platform decisions when our positions aren't completely valid. [21:55] <@svulliez> Oh well. We're here. [21:56] <@svulliez> I motion to open the meeting up to non-council members. We're all here, we should discuss the party. [21:56] <@svulliez> Just me and you is kind of pathetic, it's a contributor to my absences for certain/ [21:57] <@Rintaran> Technically at this point there is no meeting, but yes, lets do so. [21:57] <@svulliez> It can be informal but we should talk about the future if the party and what is on out mind. [21:57] <@svulliez> *our [21:58] <@Rintaran> Welcome viewers, you're now contributors. Feel free to let us know what you've been up to, or if you have some questions or things you'd like to discuss. [22:00] <@svulliez> Can we talk about leadership style? A few people here are running for leader and maybe some collaboration would benefit us [22:01] <@Rintaran> By the looks of it, there's just you and I here. But I suppose we can run with it. [22:02] <@svulliez> I'm quite happy being the secretary, it seems as though Jake, Johann, You and Jack are the frontrunners. Just from the candidates endorsements. [22:03] <@svulliez> Jack would make a good president I think, I'm curious to see who else comes out [22:03] <@svulliez> I think you guys are all really good choices. [22:03] <@Rintaran> I know Hunt was considering it, and I would really like to see him go for Presidency. [22:04] <@Rintaran> From what Jack's expressed, he would prefer Deputy Leader, but he can't discount Leader if he wants that position. It's always a shot. [22:04] <@svulliez> Hm. Hunt could also go for vice president. [22:05] <@svulliez> Hm, does the deputy have extra powers or is he just the next in line? [22:05] <@svulliez> Is there any difference in authority there? [22:05] <@Rintaran> As its written, next-in-line. There really isn't any difference in authority as it is laid out, merely obtaining the chair position and leading the board (and in turn the party). [22:07] <@svulliez> Interesting. I'm really looking forward to this new party with more people. [22:07] <@Rintaran> The top is only organizational structuring. The real work is all at ground level. [22:08] <@Rintaran> We can direct, build, create, etc at the top, but without people bringing the message and doing things locally, no one will pay much attention. [22:08] <@svulliez> Well a plurality of ideas is best, we need to be collaboratively working so it's good to have extra people invested [22:08] <@Rintaran> It's up to us to provide the tools so people can work at the local level. :) [22:09] <@svulliez> I agree that local relations is important but there is also the online public relations side [22:09] <@Rintaran> Definitely a plurality of ideas, provided no one is back-against-the-wall must happen or rage- quit on their idea. [22:09] <@Rintaran> Yes, there definitely is. And we need more people working on that. [22:09] <@Rintaran> Were you the one that posted the GoDaddy bits? Or was that a surprise showing by Stephane? [22:10] <@svulliez> jakedaynes [22:10] <@Rintaran> Ah. That explains it. [22:10] <@svulliez> For the record, I take evidence and reason really seriously and I think it's pretty essential [22:11] <@svulliez> The ragequit claims [22:11] <@Rintaran> It's essential that we apply it, and I don't think you'll get much argument in that aspect. [22:11] <@svulliez> Asorry I am on my phone [22:11] <@svulliez> The ragequit factor is real but not as disruptive as you'd think [22:12] <@svulliez> In decentralized volunteer collectives [22:12] <@svulliez> It's inevitable but it's a cleansing process [22:12] <@Rintaran> It is when its members of the board that ragequit, or sneak off without notifying anyone... [22:13] <@svulliez> Absent leader, no access to the backend or funds [22:13] <@Rintaran> Exactly. [22:14] <@svulliez> I was disenfranchised as the dickens [22:15] <@svulliez> I could have done more, but there are some harsh realities when it comes to abandoned volunteer collectives [22:15] <@Rintaran> Well, we need two more people to sign on as directors of the Pirate Party of Canada fund. Once on there, we have another pair of people we can access the fund through so it won't all be blokaded while waiting on Stephane. [22:16] <@Rintaran> He's usually pretty good when you e-mail him though. [22:16] <@svulliez> I wish that it hadn't taken so long to come to this vote. [22:16] <@svulliez> I think Stephane and the others involvement has been reasonable and more than we could ever ask for [22:16] <@Rintaran> I agree. Mikkel promised he would do it, and we all put our trust in him. Especially after his rage "why is no one doing anything e-mail" [22:17] <+Nuitari> Bac [22:17] <+Nuitari> k [22:17] <@Rintaran> Welcome back Stephane. Were your ears burning? [22:17] <@svulliez> The problem is the lack of council elasticity and small numbers [22:18] <+Nuitari> not really, was cleaning up the crib again [22:18] <+Nuitari> Zara's been having a stomach flu for almost a week now :/ [22:18] <@Rintaran> That sucks. [22:19] <+Nuitari> ya [22:20] <@Rintaran> How are things going on your end? You've seemed quiet the past few weeks. [22:20] <+Nuitari> crazy a bit [22:21] <+Nuitari> I'm happy to see jakedaynes back [22:22] <@svulliez> Me too [22:22] <+Nuitari> got a big project that had to be finished before the break at work [22:22] <+Nuitari> then got Zara's stomach flu on xmas eve [22:23] <+Nuitari> did the fuck off godaddy thing too [22:24] <@svulliez> Awesome [22:24] <+Nuitari> I'm also going to move my business' account [22:24] <@Rintaran> Nice. [22:25] <+Nuitari> but that will be over the next year [22:25] <+Nuitari> 231 domains [22:25] <+Nuitari> but most of them are customers so I have to wait for the renewal date to be closer [22:25] <@Rintaran> Ouch. That'll hurt GoDaddy's bottom line. [22:26] <+Nuitari> they did it to themselves [22:26] <@Rintaran> Most definitely. I wish I had noticed the posts on the front page sooner so I could have shared them through the social media... [22:27] <+Nuitari> still do it [22:28] <+Nuitari> and namecheap also has ssl, so that's a bit more business away from godaddy [22:29] <@svulliez> I had an idea for a campaign. We could encourage people to make commercials that are remixes of old material to support the pirate ideology [22:29] <@Rintaran> I just shared the first post on FB & G+. Twitter catches the posts too, so it'll be passed on. I'll X-post the 2nd one tmw to give some space and spread them out a little. [22:30] <@svulliez> Like commercials except composed of copyrighted material. Distributed by the Streisand effect. [22:32] <@svulliez> I think it's a nice grey areas direct action type thing [22:32] <@svulliez> I'm going to take the silence as a resounding unanimous go ahead [22:32] <@Rintaran> It sounds like a good idea to me. [22:33] <@Rintaran> We have a YouTube channel, may as well use it. [22:33] <@Rintaran> Do you know some people you can get on this? [22:33] <@svulliez> Not explicitly, I could try to pull some strings [22:34] <@svulliez> Opening it to the public would be ideal once we get a few [22:34] <@svulliez> Could be a self replicating meme [22:34] <@Rintaran> Could work out to something quite interesting. Hopefully the message will be upheld. [22:35] <@Rintaran> I've got a new compy on the build over here, so I should have proper editing power coming online in the next couple months. It'll give me the chance to get back into some video editing again. [22:36] <@Rintaran> I'm considering adding a semi-regular video-column to Through the Eyes. Maybe do some virtual interviews of candidates, PB & Exec Board members, etc. [22:37] <@Rintaran> Although not officially connected to the party, it reaches an almost entirely Canadian audience that wouldn't surf to the PPCA site on their own. [22:38] <@svulliez> Sounds good to me. We should modify the Ppca blog to repost your things, falkvignes things, postings by myself and others [22:38] <@Rintaran> Most of my audience are small-time authors, young teachers, event managers, and the occasional retail electronics former/current employee. [22:39] <@Rintaran> Is that possible to do outside of turning it into just another RSS feed? [22:39] <@svulliez> The volunteer blog didn't work out, although I thought it was an ok idea [22:39] <@svulliez> Yeah, we could be selective and maybe even editorial [22:39] <@Rintaran> The PR Committee bit didn't work out. Not enough active members. [22:40] <@svulliez> Yeah, no fun [22:40] <@svulliez> We'll just keep making pragmatic steps and trying to reach a broader audience [22:41] <@svulliez> I think we're on the road, this election took forever to come but it was great experience to be part of occupy [22:41] <@Rintaran> It's working. We're growing. And local meetings are definitely on the rise. Have you had a peak at January's calendar? [22:41] <@svulliez> It's looking nice. People have been waiting [22:42] <@svulliez> I know I have. [22:42] <@Rintaran> The new year is a great time for people to swing into action. I just wish they hadn't waited so long.
